The members of the PRIN PNRR 2022 Nea_Via project will present the project and some of the ongoing research during the first study seminar, which will feature, as external discussants, Cettina Lenza, former Full Professor of History of Architecture at the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Giovanni Muto, former Full Professor of Modern History at the University of Naples Federico II, Andrea Pane, Full Professor of Architectural Restoration, and Massimo Visone, Associate Professor of History of Architecture, both at the University of Naples Federico II.

Maria Gabriella Pezone, Principal Investigator of the project, and Giuseppe Pignatelli Spinazzola will present the PRIN PNRR 2022 Nea_Via project as part of the series Storie in Movimento. Dialogues and Paths on the Lives of the Widespread Cultural Heritage.

Storie in Movimento. Dialogues and Paths on the Lives of the Widespread Cultural Heritage is a widespread series organized by the Municipality of Naples, scheduled from November 25 to December 1, 2024. Through presentations, talks, open round tables, and tours, the series aims to convey the vocation, history, and life of the places, monuments, and the tangible and intangible widespread cultural heritage of the city. The project will offer a moment of extensive knowledge sharing, bringing together scientific research, cultural experiences, regeneration activities, contributions from artists, actions by social innovators, and studies by architects, art historians, anthropologists, and heritage scholars. The goal is to capture the complex scenario that constitutes the tangible and intangible widespread cultural heritage of Naples. The research and projects will cover archaeology, monuments, urban areas, music, art, and architecture, weaving together stories from the distant past and exploring the depths of the city, up to contemporary artworks and significant regeneration projects taking place today. A rich and dynamic program will unfold across different locations in the city, showcasing the layers between heritage, the legacy of the past, and its active and potential lives in the contemporary era.

The presentation will take place on Tuesday, November 26, at 5:00 PM, at the Casa della Cultura in Palazzo Cavalcanti, via Toledo 348, Naples. The conference, organized by the Società Napoletana di Storia Patria as part of the series La storia nel castello, will take place on Thursday, October 31, at 11:00 AM at Castelnuovo (Maschio Angioino) in Naples.

Giuseppe Pignatelli Spinazzola and Maria Teresa Como, who will lead the presentation, are members of the PRIN PNRR 2022 Nea_Via project, conducted by the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli and the University of Naples Suor Orsola Benincasa.

Erected in 1535 by Ferdinando Alarcon, Marquis della Valle, the villa is mentioned by Carlo Celano for its “strong tower, built for security in case of Turkish incursions.” Gradually expanded, the residence was acquired in the 19th century by the Caracciolo di Torella family, then by Leopold of Bourbon, and, after the Unification of Italy, by Giuseppe Caravita, Prince of Sirignano, who preserved its towered appearance, which still distinguishes it today. Serving as the headquarters of Tirrenia between 1937 and 2017, the villa is currently being converted into a hospitality facility.

Giuseppe Pignatelli Spinazzola, who will lead the presentation, is a member of the PRIN PNRR 2022 Nea_Via project, conducted by the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli and the University of Naples Suor Orsola Benincasa.

The lecture will take place on Monday, October 7, at 9:00 AM in room SL 2.7, via Forno Vecchio 36, Naples, as part of the Laboratory of Architectural and Urban Composition of the Master’s Degree Course in Architecture at the University of Naples Federico II.

Maria Teresa Como, who will lead the presentation, is a member of the PRIN PNRR 2022 Nea_Via project, conducted by the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli and the University of Naples Suor Orsola Benincasa.

On Sunday, September 29, on the occasion of the European Heritage Days – GEP 2024, the members of the PRIN PNRR 2022 Nea_Via project are organizing a walk through the Chiaia district in Naples to discover the 16th and 17th-century villas that have either disappeared or been so transformed that they are difficult to identify.

Starting from Palazzo Cellamare, the walk will continue to the residences of the d’Avalos del Vasto and the Carafa di Roccella families, and then to the villa of Alfonso d’Aragona. Along the Riviera di Chiaia, participants will identify traces of the properties of Diomede Carafa (now Palazzo Ruffo della Scaletta and Villa Pignatelli) and the Alarcon della Valle family (headquarters of Tirrenia until 2017). The walk will end between the Church of S. Maria in Portico and Palazzo Nobile, where the villas of the Orsini di Gravina and the Sanseverino di Bisignano once stood.

Meeting point: 11:00 AM at via S. Caterina 76, in front of the Church of S. Caterina a Chiaia.
